1 arrested after downtown Indianapolis shooting leaves 7 juveniles wounded
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department made an arrest related to the late March incident that led to seven juveniles being shot in downtown Indianapolis.
On April 5, IMPD arrested a 17-year-old for one count of criminal recklessness, a Level 5 felony, and one count of dangerous possession of a firearm, a Level 5 felony, in relation to his alleged role in the March 30 shooting.
The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office identified the person as 17-year-old King Dennis. The office is expected to make the final charging decision in this matter.
Seven juveniles, all between the ages of 12-16, were shot in the corner of Illinois and Maryland streets in downtown Indianapolis on March 30. All injuries that were reportedly sustained during the incident were not life-threatening.
The department said in a news release that it continues to review surveillance video of the incident and continues to speak to witnesses. The department aims to identify other suspects who were involved in the late March shooting.
“IMPD would like to thank the IMPD officers and detectives who investigated this shooting as well as the community for their cooperation and support,” the release said.
The incident led IMPD stating that they would enforce the state’s juvenile curfew laws. On Tuesday, the department said that they did not encounter any juveniles out past curfew this past weekend.
“The defendant’s criminal history, the alleged conduct, and Indiana statute require this individual to face felony charges as an adult,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a news release. “I want to thank the investigators for getting us to this point, but this is the first step— as this matter remains under investigation. We will continue to pursue leads and information until everyone involved is held accountable for their actions.”
Officials with the prosecutor’s office said in the release that the state has filed a motion for a greater than standard bond, as well as a stay away order that would prohibit Dennis, upon release, from entering a six-block radius from where the shooting occurred.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the department’s aggravated assault office at (317) 327-3475 or email the detective leading the case.
