1 killed, 5 shot in Broad Ripple bar shooting
INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a shooting that killed one person and wounded five others early Saturday morning.
“Acts of violence like this have far-reaching impacts. I am disappointed we are standing here talking about another rare but extremely impactful incident of violence in Broad Ripple,” said IMPD Commander Matthew Thomas.
Law enforcement has confirmed that the shooting happened just before 1:30 a.m. inside Landsharks in the 800 block of Broad Ripple Ave. Authorities confirmed that one person was killed and five others were injured in the shooting.
Emergency responders transported five victims by ambulance to area hospitals, while the sixth victim self-transported to a hospital, according to officers.
“Business owners, community leaders, and officers have gone to great lengths to ensure each night is safe. As we saw tonight, all it takes is one person with a firearm and a bad attitude to ruin the peace and fun that is normally enjoyed by all of our visitors.”
IMPD has not shared the description of a suspect or a motive for what led up to the shooting. No arrests or persons of interest have been named.
“Currently, there are no suspects in custody, but I assure you we have all resources, including our federal partners involved in working to hold the people responsible for this incident accountable,” according to Thomas.
“Violence in our community is absolutely unacceptable, and we urge our fellow community members with knowledge of tonight’s events to come forward,” stated Thomas.
The Broad Ripple Village Association also released a statement:
Our Broad Ripple community experienced a shooting early this morning inside Landsharks, killing one victim and leaving five others injured. We are saddened by the events that took place inside Landsharks. It is reprehensible that a life was lost, and that several individuals were injured emotionally and physically.
While the BRVA does not have the authority to regulate establishments, we are committed to continue working with business owners in the Village to help support a safe environment for our residents and visitors and will do everything within our power to advocate for those responsible to be held accountable.
Security measures and operating procedures that keep staff and patrons safe are critical. The majority of the bars in the Village are committed to and have put recommended safety procedures in place.
We stand ready to continue working with the mayor, prosecutor, IMPD, and both city and state legislators to take a stand against violence and implement effective solutions to create a safe and peaceful environment for our residents, visitors, and businesses.
