10th National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis begins
INDIANAPOLIS — Around 55,000 Catholics are gathering in Indianapolis this week for the 10th National Eucharistic Congress.
You’ll see them filling the seats of Lucas Oil, the halls of the Indiana Convention Center, and sidewalks and streets downtown.
For the last 3 years, believers have been on a mission of revival leading up to this moment.
“This is about bringing Catholics together to think about and learn more about the Eucharist in all its many dimensions because it’s the central part of our life as Catholics,” said Father Donald Richardson.
He is the Dean of the cathedral in Sydney Australia and flew 15 hours just to be a part of the experience.
“It’s just an opportunity, I think, for the church to come together from all over the place and to concentrate on what we have in common and to explore all of everything that binds us together in Christ,” said Father Richardson.
Eager to attend the liturgies, prayers, and exhibitions, he hopes to bring the concept to his country in the future.
“It’s great to see all these people coming in, streaming in big lines coming in, and they all look happy and they’re here for a great thing,” he said.
Many participated in the pilgrimage across the country over the last 2 months, one of the largest and longest in the world.
“It came from Minnesota, south came from Texas, from the east, Connecticut, and from the west, of course, California and then if you look at the routes, Indiana it makes a cross,” said Kham Ngondara, one of the attendees.
He walked part of the way from Pennsylvania to get here.
“When I got off the bus, I was amazed,” said Ngondara. “To see all the priests, all the nuns, and just everybody who has the same belief as you do.”
The last National Eucharistic Congress took place in 1941, 83 years ago.
