2 Xfinity scams to watch out for

INDIANAPOLIS — Xfinity/Comcast customers need to be on the lookout for a couple scams aimed at gaining access to your account.

According to the Trend Micro blog, the crooks are using emails that look very realistic to trick you into thinking you’re really communicating with Xfinity. One email that appears to be from the company states your terms have been updated and in order to continue accessing your account, you need to log in and accept the terms. The email contains a link that purportedly takes you to the Xfinity login page.

However, Trend Micro points out, the link will actually take you to a copycat website designed to capture your login information as you type it. When you try to access your account, you’ll actually be giving the scammer your login information, which they can use to access other sensitive information like personal details about you and the payment method you have stored on the site.

You can spot that email by the generic “Dear Mail User” greeting, and a typo at the start of the second paragraph.

A second scam email claims you’ve made changes to your Wi-Fi network, and you need to click the button embedded in the email to manage your settings. If you don’t, all your devices won’t be able to connect to the network.

But think about it: did you really make any changes to your Wi-Fi network? If not, you can delete the email because that blue button will do the same thing as the first scam: take you to a fake website designed to steal your login and personal information.

As usual, you’re encouraged not to click the links included in emails like these. Instead, go to Xfinity’s website, log into your account and see if there are any terms you need to update. That way, you know you’re dealing with the real company.
