Chilly start to June; Rain likely during work week
Meteorological Summer kicks off cool, follows warm Meteorological Spring
The high temperature of 72° today marked the coolest June 1st for Indianapolis in nine years. 72° is the normal high for May 10-12. This continues the stretch of below-normal temperatures, now in its fifth consecutive day. The cool June start also comes on the heels of one of Indianapolis’s warmest Meteorological Spring’s on records.
March-May was the third warmest and May 2024 tied as the 10th warmest on record. It should come as no surprise given that 67% of days March-May had above normal temperatures!
Rain brings renewed muggy dew points, warmth to follow
It was a soggy Saturday across most of Central Indiana with periodic showers for the late morning and afternoon hours. Heading into the evening, showers will turn more scattered in nature and gradually exit by Sunrise Sunday morning. But if you were outside at all with the rain, you most definitely “felt” the moisture in our air.
Dew points well into the 60s came with the rain. The much more moisture-rich environment will be around for the next several days as our temperatures warm up. Depending on how quickly our skies clear, Sunday could see several spots hit 80° with Monday-Wednesday having highs in the low-to-mid 80s. Each day will still feel a touch muggier.
Scattered storm chances during the warmth
After Saturday’s rain moves out, storm chances return again late Monday. With the added moisture and warmer temperatures, several scattered showers and thunderstorms are likely at times. Dry hours are promised but Tuesday-Wednesday have the best storm chances over the next week.
Severe weather chances look low at this time. However, the added humidity will serve as fuel for several downpours and some periodic hours of rainfall in that timeframe.
Pattern shift to follow
By next weekend, temperatures look to drop back into the 70s for several days following the opening week of June. Cooler northwest flow will bring a drier air mass in here with it. This looks to be the story beginning next weekend.
