Docs: Richmond mom leaves kids alone in trailer, faces neglect charges

INDIANAPOLIS — A Richmond woman was charged after reportedly leaving her four children at her trailer home unattended.

Shantell Caballero, 29, was charged with four counts of Neglect of a Dependent, a Level 6 Felony.

The Richmond Police Department was dispatched to the 800 block of Northwest 5th St. in Lot 77 on Friday, July 19, on a report of child neglect. The caller reported that a woman left the home with four small children inside.

According to court documents, Caballero left the kids while she went to work at an area restaurant. The kid’s ages are 2, 3, 6, and 8. The affidavit of probable cause said that the 8-year-old was disabled and unable to walk without assistance.

Upon checking the home, the Wayne County Communications advised that the children were dirty, had sagging diapers, and they all complained of hunger. Officers further learned that the Department of Child Services had previously been involved with Caballero to set up a “safety plan.”

After an inspection of the home and photographs of the children with soiled diapers, detectives went to her workplace and arrested her for neglect. Caballero claimed that a man would ride a bike to watch her kids, but she did not provide further information on the individual to officials.

Information will be updated as it becomes available.
