Greenwood FD: 4-year-old drowned in local pond

GREENWOOD, Ind. — A 4-year-old drowned in a pond in Greenwood Sunday night.

According to the Greenwood Fire Department, first responders were called to the 900 block of Hacienda Drive around 9:14 p.m. on a report of a missing 4-year-old girl. By 9:15 p.m., police were on scene.

Officials reported that one of the responding officers quickly found the missing girl in a nearby pond. The officer jumped in the water, removed the girl and began performing CPR.

By 9:18 p.m., the Greenwood Fire Department had arrived at the scene and started caring for the girl. Within 10 minutes, she was transported to a local hospital. A GFD spokesperson confirmed the girl died at the hospital.

Investigators are still trying to determine what led up to the girl’s drowning. She was visiting family at the time of her disappearance.

Per GFD, the girl had been missing for about an hour before police found her. Officials indicated that her family was looking for her before first responders made it to the scene.
