13-year-old critically injured in Greenwood shooting; 2nd 13-year-old arrested by police

GREENWOOD, Ind. — A 13-year-old was critically injured in a shooting in Greenwood early Sunday morning.

According to a press release, officers with the Greenwood Police Department responded to the 1100 block of Crescent Drive around 1 a.m. on a report of an attempted suicide. When police arrived at the scene, they found a 13-year-old male who had been shot.

Per GPD, the boy was transported from the scene to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. As of 5:07 p.m. Sunday, the 13-year-old was still in critical condition, according to GPD.

Police’s subsequent investigation of the incident revealed the boy was one of six juveniles playing with a gun before the shooting.

While the children were playing with the gun, a second 13-year-old pointed a gun at the victim and shot him. After the shooting, five of the juveniles fled the scene, leaving the victim behind.

According to GPD, the alleged shooter called 911 and reported that an attempted suicide had happened on Crescent Drive.

Police have arrested the 13-year-old suspect on a preliminary charge of attempted murder. GPD reported that he is currently being held at the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Facility.

Investigators are still examining the shooting. GPD detectives are working with the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office to determine if any additional charges need to be filed in the case.
