IMPD, Cumberland PD trying to determine if east side shootings are connected

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s homicide detectives are examining the last 24 hours of Chyon Crabtree’s life to determine if his connection an early Saturday morning shooting in Cumberland led to his own death a day later.

Crabtree was found fatally wounded inside a home in the 1800 block of Holloway Avenue in Martindale-Brightwood early Sunday morning.

Almost exactly 24 hours before, Crabtree and a teenager from Beech Grove were apprehended running away from a pair of shots fired incidents at an apartment complex in Cumberland.

The 18-year-old suffered a survivable gunshot wound to the head from an undetermined weapon.

Police said they recovered shell casings, three guns, ski masks, cash and drugs from the pair who were fleeing on foot because there was no evidence they had a vehicle.

Investigators have not determined if Crabtree and his partner were involved in a robbery attempt.

Crabtree was held for questioning and released, as a witness later told FOX59 and CBS4.

The witness said Crabtree returned to the house on Holloway where he sometimes stayed and admitted he had “been in some trouble” earlier in the day out east and suffered a gash to the forehead during his scuffle with police.

The witness told FOX59 that he was asleep before midnight Saturday night when he was awakened by gunfire.

The man left his home only to return 30 minutes later and discover Crabtree on the porch of a bullet-riddled house.

Crabtree refused medical assistance, and three hours later, when his conditioned worsened, the witness called for help.

By the time police arrived, Crabtree was dead.

Officers located multiple shell casings outside the house. At about 11:50 last night, there was a shots fired run in the same area. Three officers searched the area,” said IMPD Captain John Arvin. “Of course, they are not going to look inside of houses, they are going to cruise outside and between the houses and things like that.”

The witness said he had advised Crabtree to leave Indianapolis and that the dead man had been unsuccessfully attempting to collect debts owed to him for carpentry and automotive repair work.

Crabtree is a former Pike High School football player, and his family is reportedly enroute to Indianapolis from Florida.
