Benton County woman arrested on child neglect, drug charges

BOSWELL, Ind. — A Benton County woman was arrested for child neglect on Thursday night.

According to a press release posted on Facebook, dispatchers received a report about a woman who was injecting an unknown substance into her arm in the parking lot of the Boswell Dollar General around 7:15 p.m. Benton County Sheriff’s deputies were subsequently sent to the area to investigate.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they located 37-year-old Kendra L. McMahel inside a car. Police located syringes, meth, cocaine and other drug paraphernalia in the car they found McMahel in.

As their investigation continued, police learned McMahel left four children alone at her residence while she was at the Dollar General. Per the Benton County Sheriff’s Department, the Indiana Department of Child Services took custody of the children soon after deputies found McMahel at the Dollar General.

Police also obtained a search warrant for McMahel’s residence and found more drugs and syringes inside it.

McMahel was ultimately arrested and booked into the Benton County Jail on five charges:

  • Possession of paraphernalia — Class A Misdemeanor
  • Possession of a syringe or needle — Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of methamphetamine — Level 5 Felony
  • Possession of cocaine — Level 6 Felony
  • Neglect of a dependent — Level 6 Felony

In an initial hearing in McMahel’s case was held on Friday. According to Indiana’s public court reporting system, her bond was set at $1,000 cash.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on McMahel’s arrest had been made available.
