Baby rhino born at the Indianapolis Zoo on Super Bowl Sunday
INDIANAPOLIS – The stork has dropped off a baby rhinoceros to Indianapolis!
The Indianapolis Zoo welcomed a white rhinoceros calf at 9:13 a.m. Super Bowl Sunday. This marks the first live-birth rhinoceros calf for the zoo and the mother’s seventh calf.
Both the mom, Zenzele, and the newborn are doing well., according to the Indianapolis Zoo.
“Zenzele is an experienced and confident mom and everything is going very well,” said senior rhinoceros keeper Amber Berndt.
The Indianapolis Zoo now has a herd of five rhinoceros. The calf will be introduced to the herd in the spring.
“Our Life Sciences team has done a tremendous job. It is a privilege for our Zoo to care for
these magnificent animals and advocate for their conservation,” said Dr. Robert Shumaker,
Indianapolis Zoo President and CEO.
