Brownsburg still cleaning up after devastating tornado
BROWNSBURG, Ind. — Clean-up is still underway in Brownsburg after an EF-2 tornado touched down. Just a week ago, Hoosiers woke up to major damage to their homes and businesses.
Since the tornado hit, families have been forced out of their homes and into hotels or Airbnb’s. Restoration companies are doing everything they can to make their homes livable. Companies like Bob’s Construction and Indy Rooftops have been out every single day working to fix damaged homes.
“Everything — I mean all the drywall, cabinets, every single thing in the house — is coming out,” said Bob Clements, owner of Bob’s Construction. “You have to haul it out in increments of trailers. I think this is our eighth trailer we’ve pulled out of here since we started this. We’ve been out here for seven days now.”

A week later and the damage to the outside of homes is still significant.
Many homes have tarps instead of roofs and fences and siding of homes are scattered throughout the neighborhood. Inside some homes, homeowners are dealing with water damage that’s forced some houses to be gutted.
“In five seconds it’s gone and it’s gone all because of water,” said Clements. “It’s sad to see. I hate to see these homeowners go through this. The walls, all of the bathrooms, kitchen, the flooring, the doors — I mean, there’s just a substantial amount of damage to this home.”

Restoration companies were out in the neighbordhood moments after the tornado hit, including Indy Rooftops which had to fight through the wind and rain to place tarps on roofs.
“When we came out, it was still 60-plus miles an hour winds,” said Cheryl Dotson, owner and operator of Indy Rooftops. “It was raining, cold, couldn’t hardly see. When we came out to assess, it was almost… it was heart-wrenching.”
It’s been a long week for restoration companies with so much cleanup still to do. It’s also a stressful time for homeowners as well, who now have to figure out what to do next.
During this hard time, Dotson said Indy Rooftops want to make sure they’re as accommodating as they can be for homeowners.
“You have to try and stay positive. Give them words on encouragement, help them with a plan. That’s really what people need in a time like that. They need someone to hold their hand and walk them through. And that really helps ease off a lot of the stress.”
Both companies say they will keep working on every home until they are fixed and it’s safe for homeowners to safely move in.
