Car flips during police chase on north side of Indianapolis; 2 juveniles apprehended
INDIANAPOLIS — A police chase on the north side of Indianapolis ended with a crash on Sunday afternoon.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were patrolling an area near 56th Street and Binford Boulevard around 11:30 a.m. when they spotted a vehicle that was believed to be connected to a carjacking investigation.
Upon their observation of the car, officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop with its driver, using lights and sirens in marked police vehicles. The driver of the car then attempted to flee the scene, driving away from police.
Per IMPD, officers pursued the vehicle to the area of East 38th Street and Broadway Street. Once there, police used a pursuit intervention technique — also known as a PIT Maneuver — in an attempt to end the chase.
The PIT Maneuver police employed did stop the car, though the vehicle flipped upside down before the chase ended. IMPD reported that its officers apprehended two juveniles at the end of the pursuit.
Both of the juveniles were transported from the scene to a local hospital with minor, non-life-threatening injuries, per IMPD. Police indicated that at least one of the juveniles will be arrested on a preliminary charge of fleeing in a vehicle.
“Any reports of a juvenile involved in a situation like this is deeply concerning to us,” IMPD Public Information Officer Drew Brown said during a media briefing. “Of course, if a law enforcement officer in a marked vehicle with emergency lights and sirens attempts to enact a traffic stop, we can’t encourage the public enough to follow the commands of that officer and come to a safe stop as part of that investigation.”
According to IMPD, no uninvolved citizens were injured during the chase. As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the incident had been made available.
