After five grueling days, 28 amateur cyclists from South Wales have completed a 600km cycle ride from Cardiff Castle to Edinburgh Castle and have so far raised £58,000 for charity.

The C2Cycling team started the marathon journey on Tuesday 12 April and arrived in Edinburgh late afternoon on Saturday 16 April.

The ride was organized to raise vital funds for two charities in South Wales, the Velindre Cancer Center and LATCH, the child cancer charity in Wales.

En route the team stopped at Ludlow, Warrington, Kendal and Lockerbie for the last 109km to Edinburgh.

GOOD LUCK to all the @C2Cycling riders who set out this morning for their BIG cycling challenge 👏🏻

Ten-year-old Hywel Evans fired the starting horn on Tuesday as his father, Matt, led the first group out of Cardiff Castle.

In June 2020, Hywel’s younger brother, Rhys, seven, was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder that prevents the body from making enough new blood cells.

Rhys died just four weeks after the diagnosis, but the childhood cancer charity, LATCH, stood by the family through the harrowing ordeal.

Matt says: “LATCH was there for us through the most traumatic time in our family life and they continue to support us even today. It’s one thing to see this happen to others, but it’s only when it hits you directly that you realize it.” what an incredible job these people do.

“The past five days have been remarkable. When Hywel fired the starting horn and we left, it was no doubt incredibly moving.

“It was a tough ride, but the support we received from family and friends when we left Cardiff, and the people who encouraged us along the way, really helped us take on this momentous challenge.”

Involvement and enthusiasm

Nick Robbins, organizer of the ride, told Edinburgh News: “This has been an absolutely incredible experience. We’ve had almost all conditions over the last five days, in almost all weather conditions, but I am so impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm of the team that just kept going.

“It’s been tough and we’ve seen everything from sheep on the road to countless punctures. But knowing we had met our £50,000 fundraising goal just before we left gave everyone a huge boost and much needed encouragement before we left Cardiff Castle.

“And the fantastic news is that we have continued to add to that total over the past few days and we look forward to handing over the money to Velindre and LATCH once we get back to Wales.”

C2Cycling is a group of 28 enthusiastic cyclists and support staff, from across South Wales, who have come together every two years since 2015 to tackle grueling long-distance rides from Cardiff to Paris for charity.

According to their website, the team has cycled a total of 23,690km – the equivalent of pedaling to Argentina and back – and several hundred team breakfasts over the past six years.
