Driver strikes, kills wheelchair-bound pedestrian in Fortville
FORTVILLE, Ind. — A driver in Fortville struck and killed a wheelchair-bound pedestrian Monday night.
According to a press release, officers with the Fortville Police Department were called to an area near North Madison and Illinois Streets around 7:56 p.m. When FPD arrived at the scene, they requested assistance from the Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team (FACT) because of the severity of the crash.
After an investigation, police determined the driver of a 2014 Nissan Rogue struck a person who was using a motorized wheelchair in the middle of South Madison Street’s intersection with Illinois Street.
The Nissan’s driver, who police have identified as a female, was transported from the scene to Hancock Regional Hospital via ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. The wheelchair’s occupant — who was identified as a male by FPD — was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials did not provide the ages of either of the individuals involved in the crash.
FPD reported that the Nissan’s driver has cooperated with investigators and provided statements. Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
North Madison Street was closed between Illinois and Monroe Streets for nearly two hours while officials cleaned up and investigated the crash.
