Emergency officials preparing for winter weather this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — A snow system that could impact Hoosiers across the state is just days away.

The National Weather Service has declared a Winter Storm Watch from Sunday morning until Monday evening.

The Marion County Emergency Operations Center is empty for now. However, come this weekend, officials will be standing by for any potential winter weather.

They’re asking people at home to be prepared for anything.

“We urge everyone to be weather aware, just like we would during severe weather in April and May and those things,” said director Jacob Spence. “This is just the same.”

Officials say that anyone who loses power at home should call and report it to AES. Their crews will be working around the clock to restore power in dangerous conditions.

“They are doing things as quickly and as safely as possible, but they are also dealing with all the elements as well,” said Mallory Duncan with AES.

The electric company reminds folks to have an emergency kit prepared with extra battery packs charged and a flashlight handy, along with having some supplies ready in your car if you have to drive anywhere.

“We’ll be relying heavily on DPW as our best source of information for what’s happening on the roads, as well as INDOT,” said Spence.

The Department of Public Works said their game plan is to start with plowing the main roads and then hit residential areas.

They will also be clearing the streets as the snow is coming down, so they’ll need to make multiple passes.

“We are all hands on deck,” said Auboni Hart for Indianapolis DPW. “Every driver will have their butts in a seat and on these roads”

DPW asks for drivers to give space to their snowplows and others on the road.

They also remind people to give themselves extra time to get to and from their destination, especially fans heading home from Lucas Oil.

“If you do plan to be out on Sunday, particularly at the Colts game, please just be aware that when you go is going to be very different than when you leave,” said Hart.
