Fire breaks out at Monroe County barn

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — A fire broke out at a Monroe County barn Sunday afternoon.

According to a Facebook post from the Monroe County Fire Protection District, firefighters were called to a property on Duke Road around 12:40 p.m. on a report of a barn fire. When first responders made it to the scene, they found heavy fire emanating from the front of a barn.

MFD crews deployed hose lines soon after they arrived at the scene. Ultimately, it took firefighters about an hour to extinguish the blaze and perform overhaul operations.

Officials confirmed nobody was injured during the barn fire. An MFD investigator determined the fire started because heating equipment was placed too close to combustibles in the barn.

The family that owns the barn told MFD its dogs were the first to notice the fire. Two other family members heard the dogs barking, and then discovered the blaze themselves.

At first, one of the property owners tried to put out the fire on his own. The flames, however, developed too quickly for one person to extinguish.

While one of the family members tried to extinguish the fire, the other called 911. MFD arrived at the scene shortly after they received the call about the barn fire.

As of this article’s publication, no additional information on the fire had been made available.
