IMPD: Teens arrested after shots fired incident leads to police chase
INDIANAPOLIS — Two teens were arrested by officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department after an early Saturday morning shots fired incident on the east side of Indianapolis.
According to a post on IMPD’s social media, officers from the department’s east district heard automatic gunfire in the 300 block of North Sherman Drive around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday. The post read that officers then saw a blue sedan traveling south on Sherman Drive at a high rate of speed.
After officers attempted to get behind the sedan to conduct a traffic stop, the vehicle reportedly pulled off at a high rate of speed and nearly struck two other marked police vehicles. The IMPD officers then activated their emergency lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop, to which the sedan reportedly did not stop, leading to a pursuit.
The post read that the sedan traveled a few miles before officers deployed a tire deflation device, which “safely ended the pursuit.” The two occupants of the vehicle, identified as a 16-year-old and 17-year-old, were taken into custody.
During a search of the vehicle, the IMPD officers reportedly located a handgun with a machine gun conversion device, along with a rifle without a serial number. Spent shell casings were reportedly found in an alley near where the officers heard the automatic gunfire.
Officials said the driver of the vehicle was arrested for resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, dangerous possession of a firearm and possession of a machine gun. The passenger was arrested for dangerous possession of a firearm and possession of a machine gun.
