Indianapolis man extricated from van after I-74 crash

SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. — An Indianapolis man was taken to the hospital after being extricated from a van after a Wednesday morning crash on I-74.

According to a news release from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, units from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, the Shelby County Fire Department, the Waldrum Volunteer Fire Department and the Indiana State Police responded to a personal injury crash involving two vehicles around 8:21 a.m. Wednesday.

The crash, which occurred on the eastbound side of I-74 near the 118-mile marker, involved a 2015 Freightliner box truck driven by a 26-year-old man from Missouri and a 2016 GMC full-size van, driven by a 58-year-old man from Indianapolis.

After a preliminary investigation, officials said in the release that the van reportedly rear-ended the box truck, causing the driver of the van to be trapped inside the vehicle. The man was extricated from the vehicle by the Shelbyville Fire Department.

The driver of the van was transported to an Indianapolis hospital, the release said. The driver of the box truck was looked at on scene.

This incident caused this portion of the interstate to be closed until around 10:54 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the release.
