Marion man runs over mailboxes while fleeing from police, sheriff says

MARION, Ind. — A Marion man out on bond tried to avoid a return to jail by fleeing from police on Sunday, the sheriff’s department said, running over several mailboxes in the process.

Christopher Nixon, 53, was arrested after being tracked down by police K9s. He’s currently back in jail and being held on preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, reckless driving and failure to stop.

According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, deputies attempted to pull Nixon’s vehicle over for speeding on Highland Avenue at approximately 1 a.m. on Sunday. Nixon didn’t comply and floored it, leading police on a pursuit through Marion’s streets.

During the chase, Nixon allegedly struck several mailboxes and drove through private property. He ended up bailing out of his vehicle at Wabash and Quarry — making a run for it on foot.

Nixon attempted to evade capture in a wooded area, but a K9 unit helped sniff him out.

During Nixon’s arrest, deputies noted signs of impairment. He was first taken to Marion Health for a blood draw before being transported to jail.

Court records show Nixon was out on bond at the time of his arrest. In February, Nixon was charged with battery of a public safety official and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

No official charges have yet been filed in Nixson’s latest run-in with police. The Grant County Prosecutor will decide what, if any, charges will be filed.
