MFD rescues 4 dogs in house fire, 1 cat dies

MONROE, Ind. (WXIN/WTTV) — Fire crews successfully rescued four dogs in a house fire while one cat perished, the Monroe Fire Protection District confirmed on Friday.

According to a press release from MFD, officers were called Friday morning to a residence in the 6900 block of South McCormick Lane on the report of a structure fire. MFD said crews were first called to the intersection of S Fairfax Road and South McCormick Lane due to callers reporting smoke around that area.

However, MFD said a deputy from the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department was in the area during the time of the call. They reportedly located visible flames coming from the residence on South McCormick Lane. That residence also appeared to be boarded up, MFD said, and it was unclear if any residents were inside.

MFD crews then worked to successfully rescue four dogs from the residence. They also recovered a cat, yet it was found deceased.

The fire was extinguished “within minutes of entry,” MFD wrote. Nonetheless, the residence itself sustained significant damage due to being under renovation.

No injuries were reported, and the residence’s owner was not present during the time of the fire.

MFD said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The dogs that were rescued were taken to an area animal shelter for the evening.
