Multiple crashes reported, vehicles submerged as rain continues in central Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS – Rain wreaked havoc on Indianapolis-area roads Wednesday morning, leaving some roads impassible and cars submerged.

A Flood Advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. for Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

The Indiana Department of Transportation’s incident map showed multiple crashes around the area, from I-69 on the northeast side to I-65 on the south side.

A few of the notable incidents:

  • I-69 southbound between E. 96th Street and 82nd Street; right lane blocked
  • I-65 southbound near 82nd Street; right lane slow due to crash
  • I-465 northbound between Lafayette Road and W. 71st Street, crash on right shoulder
  • I-70 eastbound between East Street and I-65; crash on right shoulder
  • I-65 northbound between I-465 and Hanna Avenue; crash on left shoulder

Indiana State Police asked drivers to give themselves extra time this morning.

“ISP wants to remind drivers this morning to use caution while driving in the rain,” state police wrote on social media. “Please slow down and give extra space between vehicles. Give yourself plenty of time. ISP already responding to multiple crashes in the Indianapolis area.”

Issues weren’t limited to the interstates. A submerged car was spotted near Hanna Avenue and Harding Street. Several cars also became stranded in high water near Southeastern Avenue and South Sherman Drive.
