NBA-WNBA 3-point shootout coming to Indianapolis during All-Star Weekend
INDIANAPOLIS — The NBA and WNBA will collide in Indianapolis next month.
The NBA announced that New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu will take on Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry in a head-to-head 3-point contest during NBA All-Star Weekend.
The competition will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium during NBA All-Star Saturday Night. The exact time at which the Curry-Ionescu 3-point contest will begin has yet to be announced.
Ionescu, who played college basketball at the University of Oregon, has shot 37.7% from beyond the arc during her four seasons in the WNBA. The 5-foot-11 guard is coming off her best 3-point shooting season in 2023, where she cashed in on 44.8% of her attempts from beyond the arc.
Curry has been playing in the NBA since the 2009-10 season. The Davidson College product is a career 42.6% NBA 3-point shooter.
Curry’s best 3-point shooting season was 2011-12, when he converted 45.5% of his attempts from downtown.
An X post from NBA insider Shams Charania indicated Curry will shoot from the NBA 3-point line with NBA-sized basketballs. Ionescu will shoot from the WNBA 3-point line with WNBA-sized basketballs.
According to USA Basketball, the WNBA has a 20-foot, 6-inch 3-point line. The NBA plays with a 23-foot, 9-inch line.
WNBA archives indicate its basketball must measure between 28.5 and 29 inches. WNBA balls must not weigh less than 18 ounces, nor more than 20 ounces.
Spalding’s website characterizes full-size men’s league balls as measuring 29.5 inches and weighing between 20 and 22 ounces.
In a post on X, Ionescu detailed her desire to shoot from the NBA 3-point line during her competition with Curry.
Ionescu and Curry’s 3-point contest will be televised on TNT, as will the rest of NBA All-Star Saturday Night. Tickets to NBA All-Star Saturday Night at Lucas Oil Stadium are available via secondary market websites like StubHub.
The most inexpensive tickets still available are $170 each, not counting fees.
NBA All-Star Saturday Night will begin at 8 p.m. on Feb. 17.
