Pavement restoration project to restrict traffic on 465 northbound for multiple weeks

INDIANAPOLIS — Multiple road construction projects will restrict traffic on Interstate 465 northbound starting next month.

According to a press release from the Indiana Department of Transportation, work is slated to begin on or after July 12. Crews will be doing pavement restoration, bridge deck patching and joint repairs on the southeast side of the Circle City.

The construction will force the closure of I-465 northbound between I-65 and I-70. On weekdays, traffic on I-465 northbound will be reduced to three lanes between the 465-70 interchange and 56th Street. During the weekend, drivers will only be able to utilize two lanes in the same area.

INDOT also released the following list of ramp closures and the projects’ estimated start dates:

  • Northbound and southbound I-65 to northbound/eastbound I-465 (July 12 at 9 p.m.)
  • Eastbound and westbound Washington St./U.S. 40 to northbound I-465 (July 12 at 9 p.m.)
  • Eastbound and westbound Brookville Rd./U.S. 52 to northbound I-465 (July 12 at 9 p.m.)
  • Southbound Shadeland Ave. to northbound I-465 (July 12 at 11 p.m.)
  • Southeastern Ave./Old U.S. 421 to northbound I-465 (July 12 at 4 a.m.)
  • I-74 westbound to northbound I-465 (July 12 at 7 p.m.)
  • Northbound and southbound Emerson Ave. to eastbound I-465 (July 12 at 7 p.m.)
  • Northbound Shadeland Ave. to northbound I-465 (July 12 at 11 p.m.)

Weather permitting, officials expect construction to be completed by Aug. 5 at 6 a.m. INDOT’s detour around the road work involves taking I-65 and I-70 to avoid the closed portion of I-465.

This latest closure on I-465 is part of a larger, six-part restoration project designed to improve travel on the interstate between I-65 and U.S. 31 on the east side of Indianapolis. All six parts of the plan are expected to be finished by spring 2025, per INDOT.

Officials encourage drivers to visit 511in.org to map their routes while construction is going on. INDOT also urges motorists to slow down, use caution and avoid distractions when driving in and around work zones.
