According to court documents, Muncie police officers were called to a home on E. Centennial Avenue late Friday night on report of a shooting. Officers arrived on scene and found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her hand and arm. She was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital for treatment.

The victim ended up telling officers that her husband, Russell, was responsible for the injury. She told officers that Russell shot her in the arm after pointing a gun at her head while the pair were in bed.

Police found Russell at an intersection near his home and took him into custody. According to the Muncie Police Department, Russell immediately confessed to the crime, telling investigators, “I did it,” the moment they took him into the interview room.

Russell’s wife detailed the attack to investigators, saying her husband had been asking her about an incident that occurred 10 years prior. Russell became angry and got on top of her on the bed, according to her account, pointing a gun to her head and telling her “I’m going to kill you.”

The victim said she pushed the gun away and the firearm went off, striking her in the hand and arm instead of her head — where the gun had originally been aimed.

After the shooting, Russell allegedly held the gun to his own head and threatened to kill himself in front of his family.

He ended up leaving the home after the victim called 911.

The Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office has not yet filed official charges in this case. If convicted of attempted murder, Russell could face up to 50 years in prison on Level 1 felony.
